Well, it is the end of the CCU summer basketball season :( It's been a fun summer watching our teams play. Every week they came out and gave their all. It was nice for them to end their season with a solid win over the Presbyterian Church in Chinatown, a team that they previously lost to in overtime. Redemption!
Kevin Bowman was back in form this past Tuesday with team high 14 points. Although PCC kept the game relatively close through the game, SFEFC pretty much led the whole way. However in the last few minutes, as PCC started edging closer, Bowman nailed the win by hitting SEVEN free throws (which quieted the PCC fans)!! He also grabbed 4 rebounds, 2 steals and had 1 assist.
Brian Regis had a spectacular game, scoring a season high 8 points! He hit two 3 point shots and a basket along with 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Sadik Twal had another great game scoring 6 points, two of which were awesome tip in baskets. He also grabbed 5 rebounds, 1 assist and had 1 blocked shot. Calvin Ho had a solid game with 5 points (one 3 point shot and putting a rebound back for a basket). He also grabbed 3 additional rebounds.
Rounding out the scoring, Jason Ching had 3 points (1 basket and 1 free throw), along with 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Matt Kwong scored a basket along with grabbing 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. Tony Wong hit 2 free throws and 3 rebounds. Kevin Chow hit 1 free throw and 2 rebounds.
Defensively, Emmu Zhou did well on the boards, grabbing 4 rebounds. Wenkai Wen snagged a rebound as well.
Thanks for everyone who showed up to the games and also thank you to Tim Wai for all the photos that he shot! See you all next summer!
The Silver team's season is coming to an end with Tuesday, July 25th's Consolation game. I have to say that moving up from the Bronze to the Silver division was tough, but for almost every game, I think the guys had a chance to win.
They definitely had a chance to beat Chinese Church of the Nazarene, the team they beat last week. But unfortunately, the birthday magic was gone. The game was close pretty much the whole time. SFEFC trailed at the half 17 to 22, but with 10 minutes left they tied the game. Then again with 5 minutes left, the game was tied. Frustratingly, most of the shots our team took in the last few minutes refused to drop and they ended up losing 31 to 34.
However, Sadik Twal had a great game and was the high scorer with 10 points! He had 3 rebounds that he put back for baskets as well as 2 additional baskets. He grabbed a total of 9 rebounds and 2 steals. Nice!
Everyone else had a bit of a quiet game. Jonathan Ching had 4 points, both coming from steals that he took to the hoop. He also had 2 rebounds. Tony Wong hit only 1 basket and 1 free throw, along with 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Jason Ching only hit 3 points as well - 3 free throws. (Nice job hitting your free throws!) He also had 1 rebound and 1 steal. Brian Regis hit one 3 point shot and grabbed a rebound.
The opposing team was able to shut Kevin Bowman down, he only scored 2 points but was able to grab 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 assists. Calvin Ho hit a basket and 2 rebounds before fouling out. Matt Kwong hit a basket and 1 rebound and Emmu Zhao scored 2 points. Defensively, Kevin Chow had 2 rebounds and 1 steal.
The next game is Tuesday July 25th at 7:30 pm at Mercy High and hoping that the guys can end the season with a win! Come and cheer them on!
The Youth team finished up their season this past Wednesday with a nice win over CUMC 48 to 39. They ended their first season together with a respectable 3-4 record. They definitely had the chance to win a few more games, but we will leave that for next season!
We didn't have Jalan Belton this week, but Otto Gin totally stepped up. Otto scored a team high 16 points with 6 of his points coming from steals and taking it to the hole. He also hit two 3 point shots, 2 baskets, 4 steals and 1 rebound. Great game Otto!
A second high scorer this week was Ryan Lau. Ryan scored 12 points hitting two 3 point shots, driving 2 steals to the basket and hitting another bucket. He also had 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 1 assist.
Three guys scored 6 points: Ethan Hom hit two 3 point baskets and grabbed 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Nathan Pen hit 3 baskets and had a team high 12 rebounds, 1 steal, 4 assists and 1 blocked shot. It took a while for Nick Wong to score, but he finally was able to get 3 baskets late in the game. He also continued to play great defense grabbing 7 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist. Calvin Ng played a solid game, scoring a basket, grabbing 6 rebounds and 1 steal.
Thanks to Murphy Lau for coaching our team this season! I hope you all enjoyed playing and thanks for all those who came to support the team. See you all next season!
Birthday boy Kevin Bowman helped propel our silver team to their first win on Saturday over the Chinese Church of the Nazarene! Bowman had an amazing game with 16 points (including a 3 point shot plus an "AND 1." He also grabbed 5 rebounds, 1 assist and secured the win with a last second steal from the opposing team who was trying to tie the game. Thanks for saving us from going into overtime! Happy Birthday, Bowman!
Supporting the win, Tony Wong contributed a solid 8 points with a 3 point shot, 1 free throw and 2 baskets. He also grabbed 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals and did NOT foul out. Jason Ching also put up 8 points with one 3 point shot, 1 free throw and 2 baskets as well. He got 2 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Jonathan Ching also contributed 8 points with two 3 point baskets and 1 bucket. He also had a leaping blocked shot, 3 rebounds and 2 steals.
Brian Regis (with his stylish new haircut) hit two 3 point shots, grabbed 2 rebounds, 2 steals and had 1 assist. Emmu Zhou put in one free throw and had 5 rebounds. Kevin Chow played solid defense with 6 rebounds and 2 steals.
This win made up for the overtime loss the guys suffered on Thursday versus the Presbyterian Church in Chinatown. For the Thursday game, our guys started off great with an 8-0 lead, but that quickly evaporated once the PCC started hitting a few 3 point shots. The game was neck and neck through the rest of the game and EFC was leading the game 34 to 33 with 15 seconds left. Within 10 seconds EFC scored 1 point and PCC scored 2 points to tie the game.
Even in overtime it was a battle with both teams each scoring a basket. But as Jonathan Ching wrote, "They splashed a 2 with 4 seconds left" and the game was over. SFEFC was defeated 37 to 39.
The high scorer for Thursday's game was Tony Wong who also fouled out before the game ended and did not play in overtime. He hit 3 baskets and 3 free throws as well as getting 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
Sadik Twal had one of his best games with 6 points (2 perfect free throws, a tip-in, and a rebound with a put back). He also had a blocked shot and grabbed 8 rebounds. Great game Sadik! Kevin Bowman also had 6 points with 8 rebounds and 1 steal.Jason Ching had a good game with 5 points (a basket and 3 free throws) along with 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Calvin Ho contributed 4 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals. Brian Regis hit a 3 point shot and had 1 steal and 1 rebound. Jonathan Ching had a quiet game with 1 free throw, 1 blocked shot and 1 rebound.
Defensively, Emmu Zhou grabbed 3 rebounds and Tao Huang had 1 steal and 1 rebound.
Even though they lost on Thursday, Saturday's win put everything in perspective. With the season winding down, the silver team has 2 games left. Come and cheer them on!
Our youth team had a tough game on Saturday versus Fellowship Bible Church. With Nick Wong, Ethan Hom and Brian Nguyen missing, the team was a bit short-handed and they lost 25 to 44. However, they did their best and it was great to see Alex Cheung back out there after missing a number of games.
Jalan Belton took a lot of hits but kept at it and scored a team-high of 9 points. He had one 3 point shot, and 3 baskets, as well as 13 rebounds, 2 assists and 1, blocked shot. Otto Gin had another great game with two 3 point shots and a basket, along with 3 steals and 1 rebound.
Ryan Lau had a good game, contributing 4 points (one 3 point shot and 1 free throw) He also grabbed 2 rebounds, 3 steals and had 2 assists. Calvin Ng hit a 3 point shot with 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Nathan Pen had 6 rebounds and one basket and Alex Cheung contributed 1 steal and 2 rebounds.
Our last game is Wednesday July 19th at 6:30pm, come and cheer our guys on!
After a long week (3 games in the span of 7 days), our youth team got their 2nd win. It was a solid victory over Sunset Disciples, 51-35.
It was nice since they had a pretty tough game on Wednesday against Hope EFC. In that game, they lost 32-61. The Wednesday game started out rough since the guys from Oakland were stuck in Bay Bridge traffic and the four SF guys (Otto, Ethan, Calvin, and Nick) had to start the game.
They actually were able to hold their own for the first 5 minutes. But unfortunately, once the Oakland guys jumped into the game, Hope EFC got into their groove and just led the whole game.
As always, even in defeat, there are always highlights. Jalan Belton continues to be the high scorer putting up 16 points in this game. He had two 3 point shots and 5 baskets. He also had two blocked shots, grabbed 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Ryan Lau had a great game with a season-high 7 points. He hit one 3 point shot, took a steal to the hole for two points and hit another basket. He also grabbed 3 rebounds and another steal.
Otto Gin continues to play well, stealing the ball and driving to the basket for two points and hitting another basket for 4 points. He also grabbed 4 rebounds and had 2 assists. Nick Wong continues to be a great rebounder, with 6 rebounds, 1 steal and one 3 point shot. Calvin Ng put in one basket, had 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.
Defensively, Ethan Hom and Brian Nguyen each had 3 rebounds.
Now back to Saturday's triumph. I'm proud to say that everybody on the team scored! Not surprisingly, Jalan was the high scorer with 16 points again. He had one 3 point shot, one "and 1", 2 put-back baskets and 3 other baskets. He also grabbed 7 more rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists and 2 block shots.
Otto Gin had great game putting up two 3 point shots, a basket, and a free throw. He also had a team-high 4 steals and 3 rebounds. It was nice to see Nathan Pen back and he contributed 8 points (2 put-back baskets and 2 baskets) and grabbing 9 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.
Calvin Ng hit two 3 point shots for 6 points and got 1 steal. Nick Wong drove two rebounds to the hole for 4 points as well as grabbing 4 additional rebounds. Ethan Hom hit a 3 point shot and grabbed 3 rebounds. Ryan Lau also hit a 3 point shot as well as 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Brian Nguyen hit one basket and 4 rebounds and 1 steal.
Great effort guys! I hope we can get at least one more win in our last two games. We get a break next week, so rest up and practice hard!
On Thursday, our Silver team played their best game of the season. And although victory was within reach, it eluded them once again and they were defeated 44-48.
They had a full team this week and it was nice to see Tony Wong and Jason Ching back in the lineup. Tony Wong was the high scorer this week with 10 points (one 3 point shot, 2 buckets and 3 free throws. He also grabbed 5 rebounds, 2 steals and had 2 assists. Jason also contributed 8 points with an "AND 1," a 3 point shot and two more free throws. He got 2 assists, 1 steal, and 1 rebound.
Matt Kwong had another solid game with 2 buckets and a free throw for 5 points. He grabbed 1 rebound and had 1 assist. Kevin Bowman had a relatively quiet game, getting into foul trouble early and eventually fouling out in the 2nd half. He still did score 5 points (one 3 point shot and one basket) and grabbed 4 rebounds. Calvin Ho had a great game scoring one 3 point shot and a basket for 5 points as well as grabbing 4 rebounds, 1 steal and 4 assists.
Rounding out the scoring, Sadik hit a basket and two free throws for 4 points as well as grabbing the team high 6 rebounds and 1 steal. Kevin Chow also hit 2 buckets for 4 points and had 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Brian Regis hit his three point shot and stole the ball twice.
Defensively Wen Kai had 1 steal, Tao Huang grabbed 1 steal, 1 rebound and had 1 assist. Jonathan Ching had 1 assist and 1 rebound.
The guys played great and looked good. It definitely was the best game so far. Looking forward to more!
The last time our Silver team played it was Rebound Mania. This past game it was the battle of the 3's. Our team hit a total of 5 three point shots! However, Cornerstone hit 7 three point shots and a lot of other baskets to win over SFEFC 24-35.
Win or lose, it was great to see Jonathan Ching getting back in the groove. He was the high scorer with 13 points, hitting 3 three point shots and two baskets, one basket was a steal that he converted into a beautiful layup. He also grabbed one rebound.
Matt Kwong had another solid game, contributing 1 three point shot and a basket for a total of 5 points. He also grabbed 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Kevin Bowman continued dominating the boards with 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist and also hitting 1 three point shot.
Rounding out the scoring, Emmu Zhou, recently back from UC Santa Cruz was able to drive to the hoop many times but only one basket dropped in. He also grabbed 4 rebounds. Sadik Twal played great defense with 2 blocked shots, 3 rebounds and 1 steal and hit one free throw.
Kevin Chow continued his great rebounding, grabbing 5. Brian Regis grabbed 2 rebounds and had multiple shot attempts but nothing fell this week. Keep putting them up Brian - they will fall! Tao Huang grabbed one rebound and Calvin Ho (recently back from UC San Diego) grabbed one rebound.
Substitute coach Jason Ching did a great job, and it is good to see the UC guys back. I'm sure that once they shake off the rust, the team will do well. Catch their next game this Thursday at 6:30pm at Mercy High School.
Thanks for those who come and support us!
Saturday was a double header for our CCU Basketball teams. Unfortunately, both teams lost. However, the youth team was on the brink of victory but a late rally by Cornerstone tied the game and brought it into overtime.
This week the youth team only had 6 players and they just didn't' have any gas left in the tank for overtime and they were defeated 35-41.
They were trailing the first half 13-22 and really poured it on in the 2nd half. A victory was in sight. But as I said earlier the other team never gave up and were able to triumph.
Even in defeat, everyone played great. Top scorer Otto Gin had a great game with 3 three point shots and 3 baskets for a total of 15 points. He also grabbed 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Jalan Belton continued to play well and grabbed 14 rebounds and 2 steals. Jalan had two "put back" buckets (where you grab the rebound and put it back for 2 points) and one "AND 1" (a drive to the basket and a foul shot) for a total of 11 points.
Calvin Ng had a good game with 1 three point shot and a bucket for a total of 5 points. Cal also had 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Nick Wong continues to be a solid rebounder, grabbing 5 rebounds and scoring 2 points. Brian Nguyen grabbed 3 rebounds. Ryan Lau had a solid game with 4 rebounds, 1 blocked shot, 2 steals and 2 points.
Looking forward to seeing these guys go at it again this Wednesday, June 28th, 6:30p at Mercy High. See you there!
The 7/8th team had a great game against the Sunset Lady Saints. Even though this was an all-girls team, the ladies definitely had skills. I'm proud that our guys played like gentlemen and played hard but with respect. They had a solid first victory, winning 42 to 16.
Jalan Belton had another fantastic game scoring 22 points. He had two "AND 1" plays as well as one 3 point shot, 6 baskets and one additional free throw. Jalan made ALL the free throws he attempted - great work! He also grabbed 8 rebounds, 1 steal and had 1 blocked shot.
Our other big scorer was Otto Gin. Otto hit one 3 point shot and had 2 steals converted into 2 baskets, plus two additional baskets for a total of 11 points. He also grabbed 2 rebounds.
Nick Wong had a tremendous defensive game, grabbing 9 rebounds and 5 steals! He also scored one 3 point bucket and drove a steal to the hoop for another two points, with a total of 5 points.
Rounding out the scoring, Ryan Lau hit one basket, grabbed 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Big man Brian Nguyen snagged 5 rebounds, one of which he put in for a 2 and got 1 steal. Ethan Hom got 1 assist and Calvin Ng played had a great support game with 1 blocked shot, 2 assists and 1 rebound.
Thanks for those who came to cheer us on! Our next game will be Saturday June 24th at 5:00pm at Mercy High School. See you then!
Our Silver CCU team debuted this past Friday. It was truly rebound mania - this is the first game that I remember, where every single team member had a rebound. The team in total had 22 rebounds!
However, games are not won by the number of rebounds. Unfortunately, it was just one of those days that shots were just not falling and SFEFC fell to Fellowship Bible Church 24-42.
But no matter win or lose, there were some definite standouts. Kevin Bowman scored the team high 8 points with 1 free throw, 2 buckets and 1 three-point shot. He also grabbed 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Newcomer Sadik Twal is our big man who snagged 9 rebounds, 1 steal and had 1 assist. He also scored 2 baskets and a free throw.
Rounding out the scoring: Matthew Kwong had a good game contributing 4 points, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Kevin Chow hit two free throws and converted a steal into a driving lay-up for a basket. Our other big man Jacky Guan scored one basket and one free throw as well as grabbing 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
Jonathan Ching had 2 rebounds and 1 steal; Brian Regis grabbed one rebound and Tao Huang took 2 steals and 2 rebounds.
This was just the first game and our guys moved from the Bronze division to the Silver division this year. It will definitely be a competitive season! Be sure and catch the next game on Saturday June 24th at 6:00pm at Mercy High School.
Hey sports fans! Another year of CCU basketball is starting and I am excited to be writing about our new team playing in the 7/8th-grade division. This team was started by Nick Wong and is being coached by Murphy Lau.
The 7th/8th division is pretty interesting because there can be a big difference in height between a 7th grader and an 8th grader! The team that we played on Wednesday night fooled me at first because they actually have some 6th graders on their team and they were pretty short. Our team is all 8th graders and on the whole, our team was a lot taller.
However, a lot of their team plays together year around in different Asian basketball leagues. And their experience showed. Our guys put up a good fight in the first half and were even leading in the first part of the game. But once they but their big guys in, there was no stopping them. And their little guys were good too!
But there were definitely some standouts for our team. Jalan Belton had a great game with 15 points, 10 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 blocked shot. Otto Gin also played well with 11 points (two 3 point buckets) and 4 steals. Alex Cheung and Brian Nguyen both contributed 4 points and 3 rebounds each. Ryan Lau stole the ball and put it in the hoop for 2 points. The final score was 36 to 46.
Even though these guys didn't score they contributed: Nathan Pen grabbed 4 rebounds and had 3 assists; Calvin Ng grabbed 1 rebound, 1 steal and had 1 assist; Ethan Hom had 1 rebound and Nick Wong had 1 steal.
It was a tough first game, but this is just the start. I'm looking forward to seeing what they will do the rest of the season. Our next game is Wednesday, June 14th at 8:30 pm at Mercy High School. Come and cheer us on!
