Why Did Jesus Rise from the Dead?

he-is-risen_tIn 2007, two of my very good friends passed away. It was the first time that people I was very close with died. It was an incredibly painful loss. The reality of death confronted me. According to the  Bible, death is a consequence of sin. Death is an enemy that must be conquered; sin is a disease that must be cured. And we know that Jesus Christ has conquered both! He conquered sin through His death on the cross for us and he conquered death through His resurrection!

But what exactly is resurrection and why did Jesus rise from the dead?

The dictionary definition of "resurrection" is "The process of being brought to life after death." This definition however, falls a bit short in regards to Jesus. Jesus' resurrection was unique and supremely different. Resurrection in Christ is a new bodily life after death, never to die again.

Why did Jesus rise from the dead?

1) Because He said He would. In Mark 9, Jesus told the disciples that He would be killed and three days later would rise again. Even the disciples didn't quite understand what He meant. But because Jesus said He would, He did.

2) To show that Christ's death satisfies God's justice. The resurrection proves that the death of Jesus is an all-sufficient price. There is no victory in Jesus' death if there is no resurrection. If Jesus died without resurrection, he was just a man who died. But in Christ's resurrection, God says, "Yes! I accept Your death as payment for sinful humanity."

3) Because He can. Only God has the power of life and death. In Christ's resurrection, God shows His mighty power (Ephesians 1:19-20). This is the power that God has also given to us for a new life!

4) To show us what is to come. We do not have to fear death. Jesus has gone before us and shows us what is to come. Our future hope is secure. Christ's resurrection shows us that it will be a bodily resurrection (Luke 24).

Because Jesus Christ rose from the dead we have this hope: 1) we know that God is faithful! He can do what He says He will do; 2) God loves us - not only did the Son give His life for us, God the Father was willing to go through the pain of watching His Son to die for us - we are that loved and valued! 3) God has power to raise Jesus and to give us new life as well; 4) God's promise is that we will be with Him forever. Instead of YOLO, we can L4E - live for eternity!

Happy Easter! He is Risen!
