Honor Your Father and Mother (Especially in Their Old Age)

Father's Day twaiThis Father's Day Sunday, we were privileged to have Pastor Alvin Louie share the message: Exodus 20:12 is interesting in that it is the only commandment to come with a promise. "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you."

But first, let's look at how to dishonor your parents. 2 Timothy 3:2 and Romans 1:28 are both biblical examples of how people dishonor their parents. When people dishonor their parents and disavow God, both family and society go downhill.

But Ephesians 6:2-3 give clear directions on how to honor your parents and God is very pleased when we do this.

One specific way to honor your parents is to provide for your family. 1 Timothy 5:8 reads "Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."

Another way to honor your parents is to care for them as they age. The book of Ruth (Ruth 4:13-15) is a beautiful story of 3 generations of care. Boaz took care of Ruth (his wife), Obed (his son) and Naomi (his mother-in-law). In Boaz' family tree was King David and eventually King Jesus!

In life, honor your parents by loving them! Be encouraging.

In older age, honor your parents by providing for them! Be supporters.

In older age, honor your parents by caring for them! Be care-takers.

Happy Father's Day!
