The Prayers That Are Right on Target (Matthew 26:36-46)

Pastor Alvin Louie preached God's Word to us this past Sunday. 141116_timwaiINTRODUCTION:

  • Selfish prayers are way off target (James 4:2b-3)
  • Prayers that are right on target are according to the will of God (Matthew 6:10)
  • What does it mean to pray according to the will of God?
  • Let's see what Jesus did in His prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane in Matthew 26:36-46. Jesus prays three times:

I. Jesus' First Prayer in the Garden (Matthew 26:39-41)

A. Jesus struggled with death (v.39) 1. Jesus struggled with His pending death (v.39a) 2. Jesus submits to His Father's will (v.39b)

B. The disciples struggled with sleep (v.40-41) 1. Keep watching (v.40) 2. Keep praying (v.41)

II. Jesus Second Prayer in the Garden (Matthew 26:42-43)

A. Jesus prays according to the will of God (v.42)

  • The revealed will of God (Matthew 6:10)
  • The secret will of God (Deut 29:29)
  • Our role and responsibility to the will of God (Eph 5:17; 1 John 2:17)

B. The disciples "sleeping on the job again!" (v.43)

  • The disciples could not watch!
  • The disciples could not pray!

III.Jesus Third Prayer in the Garden (Matthew 26:44-46)

A. Jesus continual prayer in the garden (v.44) B. The disciples continual "sleeping on the job" (v.45-46)

CONCLUSION:

  • Jesus prayed in accordance to the will of God (Matthew 26:39,42)
  • Believers are to pray in accordance to the will of God (Matthew 6:10)
  • As a result of Jesus' prayer and obedience to the will of God, we receive the benefits and blessings of His so great salvation (Hebrews 2:3, 9-11)
